Xiaoxiao overview

Xiaoxiao

Xiaoxiao (pinyin: bì xiāo), a musical instrument of the Dai nationality, is popular in Menglian Dai, Lahu and Wa Autonomous County of Simao City, Yunnan Province and Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture.

The body of the flute is made of bamboo, and it is mostly made of bamboo tubes with bamboo joints. The length of the tube is 25 cm, and the diameter of the upper end is 2 cm to 2.5 cm. There is a bamboo joint at 9 cm from the upper end of the tube, and the other bamboo joints are transparent. An oval sounding hole is opened under the bamboo joint on the back of the tube body, and a ventilation hole is opened at the edge of the bamboo joint above the sounding hole in the pipe, so that the upper and lower ends of the bamboo joint are connected. There are five circular sound-pressing holes on the front of the pipe body, of which the first, third and fifth holes are slightly larger, and the second and fourth holes are slightly smaller. There is also a seven-hole flute.

Xiaoxiao has a crisp pronunciation and a high-pitched tone. Often used for solo. It is a self-entertainment wind instrument favored by the Dai people. The music is mostly improvised, and the popular solo pieces include "Love Song" and so on.
