Horse Racing

Composition: Huanghaihuai Ethnic Group: Liu Region: Liu

Erhu: Yang Xue

Composed by composer Huang Huaihai in the early 1960s based on a popular Inner Mongolian folk song "Red Flag Song", "Horse racing" depicts the spectacle of horse racing at the Nadam Fair, a traditional festival in Inner Mongolia. The music begins with a great momentum, a warm atmosphere, herds of horses galloping across endless meadows, raising clouds of dust. Subsequently, a large section of the plucked string resembles a tapping horse's hooves, which makes the most eye-catching horse run and jump with the lively melody. Then, the Erhu simulated horse head qin played a long and pleasant melody, depicting the beautiful grassland and the Mongolian homeland, which was fascinating. At the end, the unrestrained melody again stopped cleanly, as if the big horse ran in the first place crossed the finish line, the magnificent riding man tightened the REINS, and the bursts of neighing of the horse and the laughter of the people still echoed in the grassland.

Anyone who studies Erhu knows that rosin is an essential auxiliary material for playing erhu. In modern erhu, rosin is applied to the bow to increase the friction of the bow hair, increase the friction on the strings, so that the erhu makes a normal sound, basically, if the rosin is not properly applied, the friction of the erhu bow on the strings is usually slippery and difficult to make a sound, so it can be said that the auxiliary material of rosin is crucial for the erhu.
