Liu Dehai, born in Shanghai in 1937, is a Chinese pipa player, educator and composer.
In 1950, Liu Dehai began to learn pipa, erhu, sanxian, flute and other musical instruments; in the same year, he participated in the amateur folk band of Shanghai Radio Station. In 1954, he studied under Lin Shicheng, a pipa player and a successor of the Pudong School. In 1957, he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music, majoring in Pipa. In 1960, he graduated early and stayed at the school to teach; in the same year, he adapted "Malan Blossom", and then started his music creation. In 1970, he was a pipa soloist in the Central Orchestra. In 1972, he participated in the creation of China's first pipa concerto "Little Sisters on the Prairie". In 1975, he performed the pipa solo "House of Flying Daggers" for the first time. In 1976, "House of Flying Daggers" was performed in the news documentary "China Visits America".
His representative works include "House of Flying Daggers", Little Sisters on the Prairie, "Swan", "Old Child" and so on.
