The Mongolian flute, originally a horizontal blowing instrument made of hardwood, bamboo or animal bones, is often used to accompany long-tone and folk songs with the Matouqin, or to accompany short-tone folk songs during the "Nay Day" event where local herdsmen gather together to sing and dance. Mongolian flute players, through the "circular breathing method", improvise like singing continuous, open and unrestrained melody. This song is derived from a short folk song that has long been popular in Horqin area. With exquisite skills, the performer plays a melodic melody embellished with a large number of decorative notes and trills, as if telling people a sad and beautiful tortuous legend.
