Niutouxun, a folk musical instrument of the Hui nationality, commonly known as "wow" or "mud flute" by the Hui people, is a small folk musical instrument made of yellow clay with strong adhesion and durability. It was called "xun" in ancient times.
According to historical records: "Xun, an ancient wind instrument made of clay. It is as big as a goose egg, shaped like a scale hammer, with a pointed top and a flat hollow at the bottom. The top hole is a mouthpiece. Four holes in the front and three holes in the back." This kind of instrument was used in the court band in the early period of the era, but it gradually disappeared and is rarely seen in folk performances. In the long-term mixed living and cultural exchanges with other ethnic groups, the Hui people were inspired by the musical instruments played by other ethnic groups, based on the basic principles of ancient "Xun", combined with the customs and habits of their own ethnic groups, and created the unique folk customs of the Hui ethnic group in practice. The musical instrument "Niutouxun" has been passed down from generation to generation.
