Miao Sanxian overview

Miao Sanxian The Miao Sanxian (pinyin miáo zú sān xián) is a plucked stringed musical instrument of the Miao people. It is called Sanxian in Miao language. It is popular in the vast Miao areas at the junction of Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou provinces, such as De'e, Longlin Autonomous County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The pronunciation is crisp and bright. Often used for solo, ensemble and singing and dancing accompaniment, it is very popular among Miao youths.

The shape is significantly different from the sanxian of Mongolian, Manchu, Han, Lahu and Lisu ethnic groups. The resonance box is not cake-shaped, but cylindrical. It is similar to the big sanxian used by the Axi and Sani people of the Yi nationality.

The traditional Miao Sanxian is mostly self-made by the folk, so the specifications and sizes are very inconsistent. The common piano body has a total length of 70 cm to 80 cm. It is composed of a resonance tube (qin tube), a headstock, a piano rod, a peg, a bridge and a string.

When playing, you can sit or stand, hang the strap on the left shoulder, the piano bar is horizontal to the chest, the piano barrel is placed on the right side of the waist, and the headstock is inclined to the upper left. The left hand holds the harp and strums the strings, and the right hand holds the plectrum.
