Zhuang Sanxian overview

Zhuang Sanxian The Zhuang Sanxian (pinyin: zhuàng zú sān xián) is a plucked stringed musical instrument of the Zhuang people. The shape is similar to the small sanxian of the Han and Lahu nationalities, and the timbre is crisp and bright. Popular in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Longlin, Xilin, Tianlin, Leye, Lingyun, Baise, Tianyang, Tiandong, Debao, Jingxi and other parts of western and southern Guangxi.


The structure is composed of a resonance box, a headstock, a piano rod, a peg, a bridge and a string. The total length of the piano body is 80 cm to 85 cm. The sound box is flat, rectangular and oval with four corners, similar to the pipa in the Dong nationality.


The repertoires played by Sanxian include: "Positive Tunes", "Moon Tunes", "Happy Tunes", "Transition Tunes", "Grooming Tunes", "Tea Picking Tunes", "Ma to Lin" and "Baban Tunes", etc.
