Buliya overview

Buliya

Bulia (pinyin: bù lì yǎ), also known as bamboo horn, is a musical instrument of the Nu nationality. Popular in Yunnan Province.

Bria consists of a blowpipe and a resonator. The blowpipe is made of thin bamboo, 25 cm to 35 cm in length, 2 cm to 2.5 cm in diameter, with a knot at one end and an open end at the other end. The pipe body is beveled at one end of the remaining section, and the inner cavity of the exposed pipe is a blow hole, and the inner diameter of the blow hole is 1.5 cm to 2 cm. The resonator is made of a relatively thick piece of dragon bamboo, 30 cm to 40 cm in length and 7 cm to 10 cm in diameter, with a knot at one end and an open end at the other.

When Bulia plays, only one sound is made, and its sound is a "beep" sound with no fixed pitch. The timbre is rich, the volume is loud, and it spreads far. Moving the resonator can make the bamboo horn make a gliding sound, and its sound is more sad. Used in folk funeral activities, it is a special wind instrument for the Nu people to report funerals.
