Dongdi

The Dong flute (pinyin: dòng dí), also known as the flute, the flute, the flute, the flute, is a unique musical instrument of the Dong nationality. Liping, Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Datong Dong Autonomous County in Hunan Province and the vast area adjacent to Guizhou, Guangxi and Hunan provinces.

The traditional Dong flute is mostly made of water bamboo, but also made of purple bamboo, golden bamboo or yellow withered bamboo. The length and thickness of the flute are not fixed. Generally, the length of the pipe is 30 cm to 40 cm, and the inner diameter is 1.3 cm to 1.5 cm. In addition to the sloping mouthpiece at the upper end, there are bamboo knots or a flute plug. The lower end is open, and there are six sound-pressing holes on the body of the pipe. Near the mouthpiece at the upper end, there is a whistle-hole with bamboo pieces.

The mouthpiece of the Dong flute is equipped with reeds, blowing vertically, and the tone is beautiful and melodious, which can not only express a tactful and lyrical mood, but also play a warm and jubilant melody. It is rich in mountain flavor, has a narrow range and low volume, and is often used for vocal accompaniment and simple solo performances.
