Miao Suona The Miao Suona (pinyin: miáo zú suǒ nà) is popular in the Miao areas of Jishou, Huayuan, Fenghuang and other counties in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province.

The shape is similar to that of the Han nationality suona, which consists of a tube body, a core, a whistle and a bell mouth. The overall height is 46 cm. The tube body is made of wood, mostly made of locally produced paulownia wood. The upper part is small and the lower part is large, and both ends are transparent. It is a hollow cone. The tube height is 26 cm. 1.6 cm, the body has eight (seven in the front and one in the back) circular sound holes, the diameter of which is 0.5 cm, and the hole spacing varies. To the third, third to fourth holes are 1.5 cm each, the fourth to fifth holes are 2.2 cm, the fifth to sixth, sixth to seventh holes are each 1.3 cm, and the sixth and seventh holes are each 1.3 cm. There is a back hole at the corresponding place between them, 2.8 cm from the head of the pipe, and the surface of the pipe body is trimmed into a wave shape to facilitate the hole pressing.

When playing, the body of the pipe is placed upright, the suona is held in both hands, the little finger, ring finger, middle finger, and index finger of the right hand press one to four holes respectively; The whistle is played by the cyclic ventilation method, which can be flat-blown or super-blown. The articulation is crisp and firm, and the tone is high-pitched and bright. The playing skills are quite rich. The modulation method is also very unique. Its first, third, fourth and fifth holes can be played as do. Can be used for solo, ensemble or accompaniment. The Xiangxi suona is a folk wind instrument that Miao people like to hear and see.
