zhugang overview

zhugang Bamboo poles (pinyin: zhú gàng) are musical instruments of the Jing people. It is popular in Wanwei, Shanxin, Wutou and other places in Fangcheng County of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It consists of a pillow bar and a striker bar. There are two pillow bars, mostly made of nanzhu. The bars are about 300 cm long and 9 cm to 10 cm in diameter. The eight strike bars are also made of hard bamboo. The length of the bars is about 340 cm and the diameter of the bars is 4 cm to 5 cm.
When performing, the performers are mostly eight males, each of which is a group of two, and four groups are arranged at equal intervals. Place the bolster on both ends of the striker. Each group of two people face each other and hold one end of the two batting bars with both hands. Bamboo sticks have no fixed pitch. Due to the difference in length and thickness, the sound of the pillow stick is slightly lower, and the sound of the strike stick is slightly higher. The player strikes the bars in a staggered way back and forth, the sound level is ordered, and the rhythm is harmonious and distinct. Six female dancers dance and jump between the bars to the music. This is the "Bamboo Bar Dance" popularized by the Jing people, which is often performed for fun in festivals or festive occasions. Bamboo sticks are not only an accompaniment instrument for dance, but also a dance prop.
